5049. Go to the Death Door’s Maritime Museum in Gills Rock

When planning our day trip to Washington Island, I figured we would have time to kill after we got back from Washington Island and our dinner reservations for a Fish Boil. Since we were at the top of the peninsula and wasn't sure when we would back, Death's Door Maritime Museum was high on my list of things to do. I knew it would be hubby approved which is always a good thing.

Death Door's Maritime Museum is in Gill's Rock and like most places in Door County is opened from May to October. It is open of the few places open past 4 pm too. It is actually open 10-5. That extra hour is really nice when dinner isn't until 6:30. It is $6/person to go through the museum.

The museum is full of wonderful artifacts about boats, shipwrecks, fishing, and maritime history in Door County.

Their display on shipwrecks is more than there is a lot of shipwrecks. There is even an display about the Edmund Fitzgerald.

There is a whole fishing boat that you can explore. I'm glad I'm not a fisherperson on the Great Lakes. The boat is not very large and not very comfortable.

Of course there are boat motors. Not as many as the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame in Hayward but a fair number of them.

There was also a history of the fish boil.

Death Door's Maritime Museum is a gem of a museum at the top of the peninsula. If you are headed back from Washington Island, I would highly recommend checking out the museum. It is well worth the price of admission.
