I was so sick of driving through Iowa. We've seen most places that we've wanted to see on our way through Iowa over the last couple of years. The only thing left is the Amana Colonies. I got the brilliant idea to come home through Minnesota instead. I would get new counties, we could go to the SPAM museum, and it only adds an hour of driving to the trip. The hubby wouldn't have to go over the nasty flyover ramp by Cedar Rapids.
One of the traditional road trip stops along I-90 in Minnesota is the Jolly Green Giant statue in Blue Earth. Blue Earth was the home of Jolly Green Giant vegetable canning factory. To draw tourists into town once I-90 was built, local radio host, Paul Hedberg, commissioned a statue to be built to lure travelers into town.
Standing on the edge of town is a 55.5 statue of the Niblett King. He has a platform that you can stand on to take a picture beneath his legs or next to him. Also in the park is Sprout, his sidekick and a small museum.
I took the usual picture between the Giants legs. The hubby was not overly impressed by this stop but did at least take my picture. We did not go in the museum as we were short on time.
As you drive through Blue Earth, various business will have additional Sprout statue. It is a scavenger hunt to find them all. There is also a good burger drive in called Cedar Inn Drive-Inn that we had lunch at.
If you are headed through Minnesota, just stop and get your picture taken with the Jolly Green Giant. Everyone else doees.
