Eating Donuts in Sheboygan

 One of my many bucket list goals is to have donuts in every state in the US and every county in WI among other things. Lofty goals I know. I mentioned this to Andrea and she was like you need to have a donut from the super secret donut place that you need to be a subscriber to obtain said donut. Lucky for me she was a subscriber. 

The super secret donut place is no longer super secret as it has a store front. Sunday Dough started as a home business and has moved to a store front. Andrea says you still need to be a subscriber to be able to pre-order. You can also take your chances of walking in and picking up some donuts but they are can run out. Sunday Dough is only open Friday-Sunday 9-2 or until sold out.

Sunday Dough has 6 core flavors: Lemon Cheesecake, Strawberry Shortcake, Maple French Toast, S'more, and Vanilla Sprinkle. There are also 2 flavors of the month. February's flavors are Cookie Butter and Hot Chocolate. Each donut is $4. To be honest there was literally 2 flavors I would have eaten -- S'mores and Hot Chocolate. I'm glad I didn't have to move outside of my comfort zone and try a "weird" flavored donut.

Because Andrea is a subscriber and we wanted to have ice cream for breakfast, she pre-ordered our donuts and picked them up. We both got Hot Chocolate which brioche dough filled with Hot Chocolate Ganache covered with more ganache and topped with mini marshmallows and whipped frosting. 

The donut was good. Was it $4 good? Not quite $4 good. Don't get me wrong it was delicious but I'm frugal. A $4 donut should wow me. It didn't Wow me. The brioche dough was very good and had an amazing texture. The ganache was a bit on the dark side.. even a bit dark for me. It could have used either more sugar or a slightly sweet chocolate (Less Cocoa percentage).

There was not a donut from that list the hubby would enjoy. He is a basic donut kind of guy and even the vanilla sprinkle was too sprinkly for him. 

Would I eat them again. Heck yes.. as long as there is a flavor I would enjoy. I would definitely recommend if you are in the mood for an unordinary donut.

So far I've had donuts in 7 states and 6 counties. I wonder where my next donut adventure will be. 

Celebrating National Eat Ice Cream For Breakfast Day

 The first Saturday in February is informally known as "National Eat Ice Cream For Breakfast Day". I always wanted an excuse to eat ice cream for breakfast. This day usually lands on the same day as my niece's birthday party so it's hard to partake. This year I was determined especially when Sweet Lair kept teasing me with their ice cream for breakfast specials.

I decided to meet Andrea for breakfast. For what we could find, there was no place in Sheboygan that was having any sort of ice cream for breakfast special. So we decided to create our own. Donuts and ice cream.

Andrea ordered Sunday Donuts for us. I was in charge of the ice cream. I stopped at Walmart on my way and debated what kind of Ben and Jerry's to get. I never actually bought myself a pint of Ben and Jerry's. Remember I'm frugal. It was a good day to splurge. Besides I had an Ibotta rebate for it. Oh so many choices

I finally decided on The Tonight Dough

We went all out. We broke out the good dishes and fancy glasses. We had mimosas. Our donuts were hot chocolate donuts.

To fully partake, I decided to put a scoop of ice cream on top of my donut. This worked well until I got to the end of my donut. Then it became difficult to eat since ice cream is not ice bit into. It finally fell back on my plate where I finished it with a spoon. 

It was a fun morning. Next year though I'm kidnapping Heather and we are going to Sweet Lair. My family will just have to wait for me to get to the birthday party.

Pie Tacos for Breakfast

Stacy asked her friend for restaurant recommendations and Hubbard Avenue Diner was a suggestion. Stacy looked into and saw it was the home of pie tacos. Okay you have me sold. So even though we had free breakfast at the hotel, we headed to Middleton for breakfast

Now of course Stacy and I were trying to be adults and actually ordered breakfast instead of pie tacos or even pie. More about the pies and pie tacos later.

I ordered French Toast and Stacy had a scrambler. O.M.G. We got a lot of food. I thought 2 slices of french toast was going to to be 2 triangles.. or no it was four triangles of fluffy, cinnamon-swirl egg bread. I'm not one for cinnamon bread but this was just like eating a flattened cinnamon roll.

Stacy breakfast came with a biscuit that took up the half her plate and weighed a ton. It was a very flaky and delicious biscuit.

Now that we were full from breakfast, we had no room for pie or pie tacos. Hubbard Avenue Diner is known for their pies and pie tacos. Several years ago when I went to the Mustard Museum, someone asked if I was going to get pie while in town. I was like no and then they explained I need to try the pie at Hubbard Avenue. This is how good they pie is.

Instead of just walking out without any yummy pie goodness, we opted for pie tacos to go. They are just what they sound like. Pie crust folded in a taco shaped filled with yummy goodness. I got S'Mores and Stacy got key lime.There were several other flavors to chose form including apple.

The S'Mores pie taco was amazing. Filled with rich chocolate fudge, it was almost too sweet but the graham cracker helped take away from the sweetness.

If you're in Madison, make the trip to Middleton for pie or pie tacos. It will be worth the trip.

A traditional Costa Rican breakfast

The agents at the site decided they wanted to make me a traditional Costa Rican breakfast. I assumed this would have been on my last day. So when one of them walked in carrying a potato sack of bread this morning, I was quite surprised that it was this morning.

A traditional breakfast in Costa Rica is Gallo Pinto (rice and beans), scrambled eggs, and fried plantains which surprisingly enough is what is served most mornings in the cafeteria. The drink of choice is coffee or fresh fruit juice.

Every one of the agents brought in something for the breakfast. We took an extended break so some of them could set up the food in the break room.

Not only was there Gallo Pinto with sour cream, scrambled eggs, and fried plantains, there was fresh bread, cheese, and fruit. Instead of coffee, there was orange juice.

I'm not a big fan of black beans but since they have no flavor, I learned to tolerate them. However, when you mix the beans and rice with sour cream, it turns Pinto Gallo into an amazing dish. I was really surprised what kind of flavor the sour cream brings to the dish.

I tried fried plantains my first day in Costa Rica and was not a big fan. I thought I'd give them another shot and nope I still don't like them. It's not really a texture thing since they are kind of a like a banana. It's definitely a flavor thing. I just can't get used to the flavor.

I am not sure what kind of cheese they had but it squeaked. For a girl from Wisconsin, this was heaven since it reminded me of cheese curds. The creamy white cheese was great by itself or on the bread for a cheese sandwich.

The agents went all out for breakfast and it was amazing. It was a nice time to sit and relax with one another too. I really appreciated the work they went through to put this breakfast together.

2047. Eat at Mickey’s Dining Car in St. Paul

When the hubby said he wanted a greasy spoon for breakfast, I knew where I wanted to go -- Mickey's Dining Car. The Mighty Ducks was one of my favorite movies growing up and Mickey's Dining Car was featured in it. When I learned that it actually existed, I wanted to go.

Mickey's was actually on our way home even though it was in downtown St. Paul. The hubby was not happy that it was smack dab downtown or we had to navigate an accident to get there. However, since there was free parking available right next to it, the hubby was okay coming back.

Mickey's isn't that big...probably a dozen or so stools at the counter and 4 booths. It is an actual train dining car which is why it's so small. There is no public restrooms. If you are dining alone, you better sit at the counter or deal with the wrath of Mary as the booths are reserved for 2 or more diners spending at least $3.00 each. It's not a place where you hang out and do your homework but it's perfect to grab a quick breakfast or lunch. It is open 24 hours and serves breakfast all day.

I had a bacon omelet and the hubby had french toast. The one thing was food is served as it is done whether or not you were there first or not.  The hubby got his french toast before I got my omelet. Both were light and fluffy. The bacon was not chopped but actual strips of bacon folded into 3 eggs. Different but not bad.

Mary may be cranky but she makes the place. She knows the regulars. She was impressed by how much NCAA basketball officials make and announced it to the whole restaurant.

My friend asked if Charlie's mom was working. I told her no and I kept waiting for Coach Bombay to come in.

Despite being downtown St. Paul, I'm sure we'll be back.
