One Last Kansas City Adventure -- Visiting Truman's House

In order to make getting our National Park Pass worth the money, we had to hit one more National Park or Historical Site with an entrance fee which in the Midwest is a bit difficult. Luckily for us, the Truman House fit the bill which I wanted to see anyways.

The Truman House is Harry and Bess Truman's Home in Independence, MO. It's where he ran for office and was elected Vice President. After his presidency it is where he moved back to and where he died.

To tour Truman's House, you need a ticket. For adults it is $8. Kids under 16 are free. Each tour is limited to 8 people. You have to get your ticket in advanced at the National Park office several blocks from his house. Just make sure you have the right address otherwise you are driving up and down the block trying to find the office when you are actually on the side of Main Street.

Once we found the National Park office and got our tickets, we had a few hours to kill so we knocked off a couple other places on our list and grabbed lunch. When it was time for our tour, we met at the house.

Our tour guide was very informative but was very stern about the fact there are no pictures allowed in the house. Because the Truman House is left as it was in 1982 when Bess died, it looks like the Truman's stepped out for a stroll and we stopped by for a visit. President Truman's coat and hat are still on the hook where he left them. The calendar in the kitchen is from October 1982. The National Park Service has not done much to change it per the request of the family. This what makes it fascinating. We could not go upstairs since it was not structurally sound but the downstairs was very cool indeed.

I am glad we found our way to the Visitor Center and was able to get in the tour before having to leave for Omaha. This is definitely a must see in the Kansas City area. It's a great history lesson and a flash back to the mid 1900's after Truman was president.
