I am weird. I like seeing famous and infamous people's graves and exploring random cemeteries. Why don't ask me. We've seen Johnny Cash's grave in Tennessee. Waylon Jennings is on the list the next time we go to spring training. So when I saw that Al Capone's grave was on the bucket list, I added it of possible spots to check out. Stacy had no objections to find a random grave in a random cemetery.
Al Capone's Grave is easily found if using Google Maps. Apple Maps got us to the cemetery but Google Maps got us to actual grave site. If you enter Mount Carmel Cemetery from Roosevelt Road in Hillside, his grave is located in the first row to the right.
There is a large Capone Family Marker and then a marker for Al Capone himself. It threw me for a loop when it said Alphonse and not Al. I had to google it to make sure I had the right grave.
What surprised us the most was that Mount Carmel Cemetery was a predominately Italian cemetery or at least it was in the early years. We knew of Catholic and Lutheran and Jewish Cemeteries. We just never thought of each church having its own cemetery that was predominately nationality. It makes sense since each church back in the day catered to one nationality. The Germans went to one church, the Polish another one. Even my dad talked about his brother going to the Polish church.
Even though it was not a long stop, Al Capone's grave was worth seeing. The cemetery itself is gorgeous with family mausoleums and a beautiful chapel.
If you are into old graves and cemeteries, definitely add this one to your list.
