A Night in Canton

When we decided to stay in Canton, the hubby wanted to stay at the La Quinta again. We stayed there several years ago and really liked the place. I could get the La Quinta or the Ramada for the same price. He still wanted the La Quinta. So I booked the La Quinta. It gave me an option of getting a text when our room was ready and I signed up for it. I got a text before we even got to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame saying our room was ready.

When we finally got to the hotel around 4-4:30, check in was a breeze. We asked the front desk person about a pizza place and she was very helpful. She gave us a menu for Papa Bear’s and said that is the best pizza in town.

Our room was very nice. Just like last time, we had a flat screen TV. I am sure that many hotels have flat screen TVs but 5 years ago the flat screen was a big deal. Since the hotel is set off the main road and the highway, it is very quiet.

I tend to choose hotels that give me free breakfast since I need to have milk in the morning. The breakfast at La Quinta was very good. There was a huge selection. It is the only place I’ve seen that has a dual waffle batter dispenser. One side was regular and the other side was apple cinnamon. Even when we had a late breakfast (after 9 am), there was still a good selection left.

Check out was just as easy as check in. If we are ever back in the Canton area, we will stay at La Quinta again.

# 2943. Have pizza in Ohio

Being married to a pizza connoisseur, I decided I wanted to have a pizza in every state since any time we go on a trip, we end up having pizza anyways. I don’t want just go to Pizza Hut or order Papa Johns in every state. I want try a local pizza place. I figured since we were spending the night in Canton, we could find a pizza place in Canton.

When we got to the hotel, we asked the girl checking us in for a recommendation for a pizza place. She sent us to Papa Bears. Papa Bears is a local delivery chain. However not too far from the hotel, there was a dine-in location that was Papa Bear/Pizza Oven. Not knowing better, we entered through the pick-up part of the restaurant. We were directed to the Italian restaurant.

We ordered a sausage pizza and cheese bread. The cheese bread was good. The pizza was rectangular and I wasn’t really impressed by it. The hubby loved it. I think it was more of design issue than a taste issue. The sausage was finely ground and under slices of cheese. It reminded me of Philly steak sandwich. I had issues with the sausage falling out from under the cheese. The crust was quite good.

I would not be opposed to going back. I would try either just a cheese pizza or maybe pepperoni. It is not bad pizza but it’s not what I am used to pizza looking like. I guess this is how they do pizza in Ohio. I am glad we had the opportunity to try Ohio Style Pizza. However, I am still partial to New York Style Pizza. 

# 2938. Play mini golf in Ohio

The one of things I wanted to do in Canton was play mini golf so I could continue to knock off states that I have played mini golf in. Since I knew I wanted to play mini golf in Canton, I planned ahead and found us a place not too far from the hotel. Online it looked like an old school mini golf course with windmills and other obstacles. Sometimes what you see online, is not what is reality. ProPuff Miniature Golf is in the corner of the Big Lots parking lot and no one was there. It looked closed and in disrepair. Strike 1.

Back to Google I go and found McDuffer’s Park Miniature Golf. We really couldn’t find it and again it didn’t look overly used. Strike 2.

This time I moved a little farther out when searching in Google. I found Rolling Greens Mini Golf in Uniontown about 10-15 minutes away. The reviews on Yelp were very good. One said it was the most challenging and unique course he has golfed. When we got there, there were cars in the parking lot and people golfing. A good sign.

We had an option of choosing between course 1 or course 2 for $6. At first we were going to do course 2 because there were less people. Then when looking at the courses, we decided to follow the people and golf course 1.

The reviewer was not wrong. The course was challenging and very unique. Besides the usual windmills and castles, there is this race track looking thing you had to get your ball around with enough momentum that it didn’t come back yet stayed on the course.  A lot of the holes didn’t have greens the entire way but cement. I found that odd. There are also several opportunities to test your driving capabilities since there is a real grass between the tee and the hole. Ever try driving with a putter?  It’s not as easy as it sounds. The hubby managed to drive it the 114 feet on the second driving hole but I had to chip it to the green.

This course was so challenging we never even totaled our scores. I remember that it took me at least 12 tries to get it in the hole. There was no one behind me so I kept trying. Despite the difficulty, I wouldn’t hesitate to go back and try it again. It is that much fun.

Canton Car Museum

When planning our time in Canton, we were looking for something do in the morning before we left town besides the Football Hall of Fame. I wanted to William McKinely Museum and Presidential Library. The hubby wasn’t very keen on that idea. So I googled tings to do in Canton. One of the things that came back was the Canton Classic Car Museum. I knew the hubby would go for that and I was right.

For $7.50 person, it is totally worth it even if you don’t like cars. The museum is filled with other treasures besides old cars.. old signs, toys, dolls, mannequins, lunch boxes just to name a few. For the kids, there is a scavenger hunt to find some of the more obscure items. I managed to find 2 out of the 8.

The original owner of the cars liked Packards and Cadillacs. There were also a handful of other cars like a Model T. There was an old Canton Police Car, hearse, and even a fire truck. The fire truck was really neat since it wasn’t repaired and left as is. I am not a car gal so I don’t know years or makes that well. If the car/truck looks “cool” I like it. I don’t spend time oohing and aahing over the make/model/year and other fine details. There was a boat/car – one of those European cars that could also be a boat.. complete with a propeller.

There were at least 4 rooms full of cars and other relics. If you have an hour or so to kill in Canton, check it out. It is a gem of a museum. Parking is free in the lot next to the museum. The employees are very friendly and knowledgeable. It was definitely the hubby’s favorite place on the trip and one of mine as well.
